Hard lighting is a technique used by photographers that uses one single, distant, light source to create distinct shadows of the subject. These shadows give the subject a 3-dimensional look. Hard lighting also creates a lot of contrast between the lightness and darkness in a photo. Photographers use hard lighting to bring out the unique texture of certain objects such as jewelry. Hard lighting is also used to make something stand out, that is why it is used in many fashion advertisements. To create the hard lighting effect place one light source to the left and slightly behind the subject. Use a sheet of black foamcore (4' by 8') to place to the right of the subject in order to get rid of any reflections and deepen the shadows. Place two smaller sheets of white foamcore in front of both sides of the subject to control the detail of the subject.
